De Temmerman suggests that Chariclea’s apparel brings to mind her ‘Artemisian chastity’ and ‘Apollonian resourcefulness’,199 by recalling the earlier points at which she dressed in this Delphic robe (1.1; 5.29). The confidence with which she displays her beauty and sōphrosunē is, therefore, supported by the confidence she now has in her ability to manipulate situations to her own advantage. Also, in contrast to Theagenes’ doubt of the worth of sōphrosunē,200 Chariclea’s bold display is indicative of the extent to which she defines herself as sōphrōn. The narrator’s comment about the crowd’s amazement that such a beautiful woman can also be pure of sexual taint is followed by this statement:
